Laguna Boy

Once in a while, you will notice that I fangirl for Rico Blanco. Like now.

Here’s a link to his tumblr.

And here’s my fangirling:
I absolutely love that his URL is “lagunaboy.com”. Because he’s from the province of Laguna. And Laguna is my favorite province. I know, I’m not from there (apologies, but I am province-less, having lived in the city all my life, and my parents grew up in the city, too), but I love it because it’s near where I live. It’s at the south of Manila, too, which is an area that I love. And I know others who live here love it, too. Seriously, our love for the South is like no Northerner has for the North. πŸ™‚ Doesn’t it show in Rico Blanco’s URL that he’s proud to be identified as someone from the South (Laguna)?

So there, I just wanted to list what I love about Laguna: Carabao Milk, Mer-Nel’s Chocolate Cake, The 7 Lakes of San Pablo, Caliraya, Pagsanjan Falls, actually, basically all bodies of water, including the private pools in Pansol (despite their being man-made), Tagalog, and Rico Blanco.

P.S. I am fully aware that the true South of the Philippines is Mindanao, but for this blog’s sake, anything south of Manila can be considered as “the South”.

Guys, I Know Kung Fu

Whooo!! 3:22 AM and still awake and blogging to fangirl about Chuck!

I know. Late nanaman ako! Haha! I love it! I love being late in liking television shows. Of course the downside is that the episodes are harder to find, and you get more spoilers, but the upside is that you get to enjoy these things on your own time! πŸ™‚

Anyway, I just finished watching Season 2 of Chuck, and I absolutely loved it. I actually only started watching the series last week, but I could not stop once I started. I love Chuck and Sarah ❀ and I know Season 3 is going to be weird with the introduction of new love interests, etc. But I’ve only finished Season 2 so let me fangirl in peace. πŸ˜€

Right. I love Chuck. ❀ So, I know it’s totally ridiculous that all the secrets of the government can be downloaded into a person’s brain, but whatever. To some people, aliens are ridiculous, and yet there are still tons of popular and award-winning literature about it. So anyway, I just finished watching the last episode of Season 2, as in literally just minutes ago, and I must say the last line Chuck said, which is the title of this post, was just so absolutely fitting. I mean, it’s a reference to one of the top best geek movies of all time, The Matrix (I’m of course referring to the first one and not the sucky sequels) and it gives an extra dynamic to the show!

Unfortunately, it is also probably the reason why Season 3 is in decline, and is under the threat of cancellation. (Yes! I did some research. Does that surprise you?) Because the main reason Chuck was so good was because the title character, Chuck Bartowski, wasn’t a “real spy” and was just thrown into the situation with the CIA and NSA and all the other spy stuff. So if he becomes a “real spy”, then it’ll just be another James Bond show or whatever other show that has espionage and action sequences. So yeah, I’m thinking… that I’m probably not going to like Season 3, and especially if Sarah and Chuck don’t get together. But, you never know.

About Sarah and Chuck though, I must say, I really like them a lot. I don’t know if I’ve told you this but I think the best kind of pairings (at least in fiction) is the Opposites Attract combination. In this case, it’s brains and brawn, but somewhat reversed because the girl is the “muscle” and the guy is the brain, but anyway, I’m just a sucker for things like that. Now all they need isΒ time travel and they’ll really get me hooked. Not that I’m not already.Β Although, there was a part where Chuck got a bit annoying, when he kept whining to the CIA/NSA General about rescuing his dad, but then again, he hasn’t seen his dad in 10 years so I guess it’s kind of fine.

Oh, and BTW, I was supposed to write an entry about my favorite geeks/nerds on television (or movies), but haven’t finished it so I haven’t posted it yet, but now I’m thinking of rewriting the list and re-ranking the names because Chuck Bartowski has shaken up the leaderboard! I love love love.

On 2012

So, I don’t want to be all girly girly on account of this being a movie about the end of the world, and people are going to see it mainly for its special effects, but there’s sure to be about a million reviews on the net about said effects and the movie’s story and direction and cinematography and all that jazz (musicians), so can I just say that whoa— there were so many cute guys in this movie! πŸ˜€

Seriously, I expected to fangirl only for John Cusack (whom I’ve loved since his Lloyd Dobler days), but then you got the pilot and the Chinese/Tibetan (??) worker and some extras and well, Hollywood is full of good-looking people, what can I say? Well, I’m not going to be saying anything about the story. It’s an apocalypse film, after all — world reknowned sites crash and burn (in a way that looks really cool (although totally improbable — what are the chances of the cracks on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to be in that exact spot?!)), people die, you know the drill. Not that I want to be insensitive about the apocalypse, just that the Mayan prediction really creeps me out so… yeah, let’s talk about the cute guys now. πŸ˜‰

John Cusack plays Jackson Curtis, the main protagonist who represents the “average person”, although he’s a published author, too, so to me that makes him accomplished and not at all “average” but anyway… His character actually reminded me a lot of Tom Cruise’s character in War of the Worlds. I mean, he’s separated from his wife, and he found out about the end of the world while he’s spending the weekend with his kids. And then he ends up saving their lives and thereby earning their trust and love (trust me, this isn’t a spoiler, or were you under the impression that nobody survives at the end of the movie?). Pretty ok, though since this character has been played before, I guess it’s not really all that notable. But I love John Cusack (come on, who doesn’t?) so I felt for Jackson Curtis and rooted for him all throughout. πŸ™‚

Jackson Curtis and daughter Lily

Jackson Curtis and daughter Lily. John Cusack isn’t very cute in this photo, but I chose it because it totally reminds me of War of the Worlds.

See what I mean? They even both have snow. (Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds)

Johann Urb plays Sasha. The pilot. And I guess pilots in movies are usually extras, but he had his moment of heroism. And that just made him way way cuter than he already is.

Johann Urb

Johann Urb apparently started out as a model. Go figure.

So, as I watched the movie, I’d been thinking and thinking where I first saw him, and couldn’t remember, so I looked it up and according to IMDb, he’s in The Hottie and the Nottie. He plays the “seemingly perfect but turns out to be an a**hole” guy. And I had to think twice about putting this reference because it meant admitting to seeing The Hottie and the Nottie, but what the hey. Honesty is the best policy, and I have to say that the ending of that movie wasn’t so bad. Of course, the hour and a half before it didn’t make sense at all, but you know, a lot of movies are crap. At least this one had a cute guy in it.

Chin Han is Tenzin, one of the workers who built the ships (you know, to save humanity). And he’s really sort of an extra, I mean, his time on the movie is probably only 15 minutes (cumulative) and he barely had lines, and he lost a leg (I’m not telling you how he lost it so this doesn’t count as a spoiler either), but he really did look very good, and next to John Cusack, I’d say that’s hard to do, but he pulled it off, and made me more interested. Unfortunately he hasn’t done a lot of films yet. He was apparently in The Dark Knight but seriously, you can’t notice anyone else in that movie except for Christian Bale and Heath Ledger (and Edison Chen haha! but maybe that’s just me), so yeah, I hope he makes more Hollywood films, or even Chinese romantic comedies w/ maybe a little action movie stuff (like Love Undercover) because you know, I think he could play a nice romantic leading man role but with fight scenes, like Kyle Reese in Terminator 1.

So, haha, shallow me only cares about the cute guys while the tectonic plates are shifting and tsunamis are bringing about the end of the world. It’s just a movie anyway, and the message is pretty much the same as all disaster movies (because really, what else can you say when the world is about to end?) — Don’t take life and the people you love forgranted, because we can all die in a matter of minutes. Not that you didn’t already know that.

Interesting Parallel

Well, it’s interesting to me.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Kubozuka Yosuke
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kubozuka Yosuke

Alright, so they don’t exactly look alike, and I’m obviously trying to force that by choosing pictures where they have the same haircut (or lack thereof), and are both in black and white. But physical appearance aside, I actually thought of these two as similar because of their acting ability.

I have loved loved loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt ever since I saw him. And that is, in a teeny bopper magazine that my sister used to buy. I didn’t even know who he was then, only that he starred in some show called Third Rock from the Sun, which at the time, was not being shown on TV where I’m from. Anyway, it’s because of him that I watched 10 Things I Hate About You (and not Heath Ledger, but he’s cool, too), and Treasure Planet, even though he’s just a voice actor for that one. And of course, 500 Days of Summer would just not have the same impact on me, if they’d used a different actor for Tom Hanson.

With Kubozuka Yosuke, it was different. I first saw him in Onatsuki, his “comeback” film from the alleged suicide attempt (and drug use?), but wasn’t paying too much attention on account of being Edison Chen-crazy. But then I saw him as a kid in GTO, and totally loved him in that one. So I watched more and more of his dramas/movies, and now honestly think that he’s one of the best (if not the best) actors in Japan. I mean, I love the “idols”, e.g. Yamapi, Sorimachi Takashi, etc. but Kubozuke Yosuke is a different breed. He’s one of the real actors, who aren’t just put in j-dramas and movies for screaming fangirls to scream some more. Other examples (in my opinion) of real actors are Tatsuya Fujiwara and Tamaki Hiroshi. πŸ™‚

Anyway, I just wanted to share what I thought of these two — that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the Hollywood version of Kubozuka Yosuke, and Kubozuka Yosuke is Japan’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Hehe.

P.S. I don’t really know much about their personal lives, so I don’t know if they have similarities there, too, but that’s not really important.

P.P.S. Kubozuka Yosuke is a Taurus. Why Fate, why?!? (Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an Aquarius, just in case you wanted to know. And he’s 2 years younger than KY.)
